Mountaineer dies in Mt. Makiling
A mountaineer died while two others were rescued from Mount Makiling at the boundary of Laguna and Batangas provinces early Monday.
Authorities identified the fatality as Reynaldo Pimentel, a dentist. Two other mountaineers, Lolita Ramos and Jun Pomiles, were rescued from the Santo Tomas trail of the mountain after one of their companions, Pretzel Bauan, called for help.
Initial reports said the four mountaineers climbed the mountain at 6 a.m. Sunday but were unable to come down after losing the trail.
Pomiles told Magandang Umaga Bayan that he asked Bauan to look for help while he stayed with the other two.
"We were separated by about 300 to 500 meters when I heard children's voices. I started moving toward the voices but I couldn't find them," he said.
He said Pimentel fell into a ravine Sunday night after failing to find the trail.
Environment Secretary Michael Defensor, meantime, cautioned mountaineers from bringing inexperienced climbers.
"They know the dangers especially in bringing non-members (of mountaineering groups). We really need to guard against this to avoid accidents," he said in a DZMM interview.
